Activities for 2016 Frozen Fest:
Ice Cream Making: Ice cream in winter? Definitely! Join us to make your very own homemade ice cream. Choose a flavor (peppermint, vanilla, or one of several others), and discover how easy it is to create your own frozen treat! Plan for 15 to 20 minutes to complete the process. Pick up your ticket at the front desk!
Frozen Experiments: Join us for a series of fun experiments using the power of the cold to do everything from shattering a flower to creating a mini-tornado. Audience participation encouraged! The full presentation of experiments lasts approximately 30 minutes.
Marshmallow Roasting: Come roast a marshmallow or two around the fire (while supplies last)!
“Titans of the Ice Age” in the NatureSphere: Journey to frozen landscapes 10,000 years before modern civilization. Discover the megafauna of the past - from saber-toothed cats and cave bears to dire wolves and iconic woolly mammoths. We wil be showing the 20 minute version of the lm. Return this winter to the planetarium for the full 40-minute version! Pick up timed ticket at the front desk.
Winter Wonderland Walks: Join staff for guided walks along the trail to discover the fascinating natural changes that occur in winter. Walks last approximately 30 to 45 minutes and will cover a little over half a mile of unsurfaced trail.
Cold-Blooded Creatures Presentation: Get up close with live cold-blooded creatures including our snakes, salamander, and turtles. Discover how they survive the winter without being able to generate their own heat. Presentations last approximately 45 minutes with time for questions.
Wintry Crafts: Make and take crafty mementos and adorable winter crafts including sock snowmen, fingerprint snow globes, paper snowflakes and more. Bring a pair of socks to up-cycle!
Winter Shelter Building: Join us outside in the Nature Place to construct a winter survival shelter using gathered materials!
Self-Guided Exploration: Read winter-worthy stories, check out Discovery bins on winter themes including snowflakes and animals in winter, play with puppets, dress up in costumes and more in our children’s Discovery Room.
